Bettie was born on May 10, 1933 to the union of Reverend Matthew and Mary Johnson. She was the youngest of 15 children. Having the benefit of a Christian home she accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, Alabama.
After high school she met and married her husband, Sammie Andrews, who worked at Brookley Field Air Force Base in Mobile, Alabama. To this union they were blessed with 4 sons and 2 daughters. When Brookley Field closed, Sammie relocated with their family to McClellan Air Force Base in North Highlands, California in 1965. This was a difficult decision for Bettie to leave her mother to accompany her husband to California, however her mother told her to go with her husband.
Moving from the South to the West Coast was a challenge but she quickly adapted in helping managing her family of eight. She found employment as a file clerk at McClellan Federal Credit Union which later changed to SAFE Federal Credit Union. She worked her way up to a supervisory role in the loan department of SAFE Federal Credit Union until she retired. She prided herself in being able to help African Americans in securing car loans, home loans and signature loans that helped them advance in life.
Bettie was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where she sung in the choir. She later joined Capital Christian Center and eventually joined Trinity Life Center. Her faith in God was strong and she prayed every morning with her prayer partner for many years. She prayed that God would always watch over her family and those in need of prayer.
Bettie loved gardening. She loved growing vegetables. On any given day, you would find her outside pulling weeds and pruning shrubs.
Bettie was preceded in death by all her 14 siblings, her husband, Sammie, son, Sam Jr. and grandson, George Dumas. She leaves to cherish her memory; her son, Darryl of Long Beach, CA, daughter, Belinda of Pleasant Hill, CA, son, Harold Dexter of Citrus Heights, CA, son, Ronald (Tasha) of Mobile, AL, daughter, Sheila (Ben) Bell of Hampton, GA, daughter-in-law, Dina (Sam) of Long Beach, CA, 23 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
