Roy Carlen Howard (1935-2024)

Roy Carlen Howard, 89, of Sacramento, California, passed away after a brief illness on February 16, 2024.

Roy was born in Walsh, Colorado, on Jan. 22, 1935, son of the late Roy D. and Mattie Mae Howard. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth Ann, his sister Thelma D. Ellis, his seven children from his previous marriage – Susan, Sankara, Marlene, Matthew, David, Daniel and Tamara – and step-son Heath.  Also cherished were his twelve grandchildren – Brent, Tonya, Heidi, Trina, Holly, Ruby, Kathleen, Sara, Bryan, Emily, Julie, and Natalie – his step-granddaughter Lauren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Roy graduated from Colorado School of Mines in 1956, majoring in physics and petroleum engineering. He then moved to Martinez, Ca. to work for Shell Oil Co. He later taught at Bella Vista High School, formed Howard Construction Company, and worked many years as an aerospace engineer for Aerojet General Corp., Hercules Inc., and United Technologies Corp. Some of his children thought it was neat they could say their dad “literally was a rocket scientist!”

As a young man, Roy was very active as a leader in the Scouting program. He also enjoyed reading and was a fan of Louis L’Amour and other western/adventure writers. He enjoyed doing woodwork and was a talented woodcarver, creating several intricate carvings (a skill he learned from his father). He and Ruth loved to go “garage sale-ing”- with a certain twinkle in his eye when he found an especially great bargain. This, and his lifelong passion for gardening, kept him active during his retirement years.

Funeral services will be held at St. Mary Cemetery & Funeral Center on Monday, Mar. 11, from 10:00 – 11:00am (viewing from 9:00 – 10:00am). 6509 Fruitridge Rd., Sacramento, CA. 95820.
