Rosemarie “Rory” Hodsdon

Rosemarie “Rory” Hodsdon, with her husband at her side, peacefully passed away on August 25, 2026, in Carmichael, California, at the age of 96.   She is survived by her husband of 70 years, George Hodsdon.  She had two sons, Jeffrey Hodsdon (Lilly) and Kevin Hodsdon (Betty), three grandchildren, Matt Habecker (Jeremy), Brandon Habecker (Keri-Ann), and Erin Nettlebeck, and one great-grandson, Phoenix Lazaris.

Rory was born to Emile and Reginia Gareau, July 11, 1930, in San Pedro, California.  She graduated high school two years early and went to Compton College, then transferred to the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she got her teaching degree and became a lifetime member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.   She taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District for 15 years, until she and her family moved to Sacramento in 1969.  She then retired from the San Juan Unified School District in 1994.

Rory loved talking to friends and relatives, famously remembering everyone’s names and family details.   She loved a cup of black coffee in the morning, one more in the afternoon and a glass of white wine in the evening.  She read the obituaries every single day.  She loved her cats and fed all the neighborhood cats as well.  She was an avid bridge player, loved travel brochures and was able to travel the world, and always had the New York Times Crossword puzzle next to her bed.  She often volunteered when needed, such as running the church food locker and running the little league snack bar.  But most of all, she was an excellent wife and mother.  She will be greatly missed.

A viewing will be held Wednesday September 23 at 5:00 pm, at the St Mary Cemetery and Mortuary, 6509 Fruitridge Road, Sacramento CA 95820, with the Rosary at 6:00 pm.  The funeral Mass will be held Thursday September 24, at 2:00 pm, at Our Lady of the Assumption, 5057 Cottage Way, Carmichael, CA 95608, followed by the interment at St Mary’s Cemetery, with a reception afterwards for relatives and friends at St Mary’s Mortuary.
