March 5, 1937 – December 28, 2024
Patricia (Pat) passed away peacefully at The Ivy Park at Cathedral Hill in San Francisco on Saturday December 28, 2024, surrounded by family. She was born March 5, 1937, at St Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco to William and Julia Challoner. Pat is survived by her children Matt (Joann), Kevin (Mike), Maureen (John) and Tim, her grandchildren Connor (Eleni) and Brennan.
Pat spent her formative years in San Francisco, Memphis, TN, Springfield, IL, and Phoenix, AZ before landing in Hayward, CA when she was 11. Her father was a WW1 veteran and jeweler, and her mother was a church volunteer and a checker at several grocery and drug stores. Both were from New Orleans. Pat graduated 8th Grade from All Saints in Hayward in 1951 and became a member of the founding class of Bishop O’Dowd High School, Oakland graduating in 1955.
It was there that she met her sweetheart Dennis Reidy, with whom she had her first big date at the Junior Prom in May 1954. It was also at Bishop O’Dowd where she met cherished lifelong friends. After graduation she joined H.C. Burns Company and Wholesale Veterinary Drug Company, in Oakland, CA as a pricing and billing clerk.
Pat and Dennis married on September 17, 1960, and lived in Oakland, Pleasanton, Westlake Village and Laguna Niguel before a final move to Lincoln, CA in 2002. They raised a large and loving family and Pat was a devoted mother and grandmother. Their homes became the center of large and small family and friend gatherings. Full of laughter, joy, and love.
Pat had a passion for volunteering and gave her time to support the church, community and her children’s sports and clubs. While raising four children, Pat also engaged in part time work as a preschool teacher for the Park and Recreation Department in Pleasanton, CA; a classroom aide at Valley View Elementary School in Pleasanton and a salesperson for the Catholic Voice, the Diocese of Oakland’s monthly publication. She was also a Cub Scouts Den Mother, 4-H Community Leader, Campaign Manager, and CCD teacher. She also looked after ailing friends, neighbors, and family members. She was also a craft artisan. Yes, our mother was a well of energy and empathy.
She was a devout parishioner and was actively engaged with her church throughout her life. She and Dennis sat on planning committees for new Catholic churches, including St. Augustine’s, Pleasanton, erected in 1968; St. Timothy’s, Laguna Niguel erected in 1996 and at St. Joseph’s, Lincoln, erected in 2007. After Vatican II, she became one of the first lay lectors and served for nearly 60 years.
Her family and friends will deeply miss her good nature, kindness, sense of humor, creativeness, loyalty, and strength. She will be remembered as a devout woman with a touch of mischief and adventure who knew how to have a good time.
