Mary Quackenbush

Mary Ann Quackenbush, a beloved sister, daughter, teacher, librarian, and friend, has passed. After a 3-year battle fighting cancer with humor and grace, she succumbed at the age of 58. Born in Sacramento, CA to Adolph and Betty Quackenbush, Mary lived in Sacramento her entire life. She attended St. Charles Borromeo Elementary, Bishop Manogue H.S., Sacramento State University, where she received a Master’s Degree in Education, and San Jose State University, where she received a second Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science. After college, Mary went to work for the State of California. For over two decades, she dedicated herself to the field of education, teaching math at Sacramento City College and as a librarian at the California State Library. While Mary never married, her heart overflowed with love for her family. She is survived by her mother, siblings John Quackenbush, Katherine Diaz (Steve), Nancy Wenzel (Mark) and David Quackenbush (Leah), aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and soon to be grand-nephew. Mary’s family is appreciative of the medical staff at Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center who cared for Mary with love and compassion during the last month of her life.

Please join us in commemorating Mary’s life on Wednesday, December 20, 2023. A visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. and a burial service at 3 p.m. at St. Mary Cemetery & Funeral Center, 6509 Fruitridge Road, Sacramento, CA 95820. Reception to follow at the Diaz residence, 3024 Notre Dame Drive, Sacramento, CA 95826 until 6:00 p.m.

Throughout her life, Mary was an avid reader and loved books. The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library.
