Martin Ernest DeAnda, 85, passed away at home on Sunday, September 3, surrounded by his family.
Martin was born on January 12, 1938 to Martin and Josephine DeAnda at the family home at 631 Harbor Boulevard in West Sacramento.
He attended Westacre School and graduated from James Marshall High School in 1956. He served in the United States Army and then took a job with Western Electric, which later became AT&T and then Lucent Technologies. He retired from Lucent with 45 years of service.
Martin loved the outdoors, hiking and fishing the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains as often as he could; tending to his yard, cultivating a bountiful vegetable garden each year and keeping an immaculate lawn and landscape; showing his 1971 Chevy and later his 1950 Oldsmobile; and rooting for the Raiders.
But he received no greater joy than from his family. He married Theresa in 1978. She would become his greatest love, confidant, and caretaker, and together they would celebrate nearly 45 years of marriage.
He did everything with an eye toward his children and burst with pride at their accomplishments. To them he was a teacher, sage, unwavering champion, and occasionally, constructive critic. More than anything, though, he was simply, dad. He is irreplaceable.
He is survived by wife Theresa DeAnda, children Rick (Debbie) DeAnda, Shelly (Lorenzo) Guzman, Darren (Mariena) DeAnda, and Joe (Samantha) DeAnda; grandchildren Mitchell, Ryan, Drake, Dustin, Preston, Roman, Emily, Brooke, Noah, Lauren, Evan, and great-grandchild Emma; siblings Raul DeAnda, Felix DeAnda, Frank DeAnda, Julia Perry, Yolanda Sturges, John DeAnda, and Dan DeAnda.
He is preceded in death by his parents Josephine and Martin, brother Ray DeAnda, and sister Josie Andre.
Services will be held on Tuesday, September 19 at St. Mary’s Cemetery and Funeral Center at 6509 Fruitridge Road in Sacramento. Rosary and visitation at 1 p.m., Funeral Mass at 2 p.m., Interment at 3 p.m. Reception to follow.
