Maria Mata Holguin

Our Mom, Maria Mata Holguin, passed away peacefully in her home in

Sacramento, California on December 29, 2023.

 

In her final weeks she was surrounded, day and night, by family

members of all ages who took turns caring for her, embracing her and

praying with her.

 

Maria was born to Francisca and Jose Mata in San Francisco del Oro, Mexico on February 28, 1930. She

loved recounting her stories of being a child and making cheese and

selling it with her mother, Francisca.

 

She married Manuel Holguin, the love of her life, on November 10, 1947

in Mexico. After having the first of her seven children, Maria moved

to Sacramento to raise a large loving family. While raising seven

children, she also worked hard night shifts in the local cannery.

 

Into her 90’s she will be remembered for her love of long walks, long

car rides, raking up her yard leaves, her favorite songs, her tamales,

her senior center days and her love of being surrounded by family.

 

Maria will be most remembered for her strength and fortitude, both

physically and mentally and as the matriarch of her large and proud

family.

 

Maria is preceded by her beloved husband, Manuel and her sons Nicolas

and Louie. She is survived by her children Alice Merola, Manuel Jr.

(Angie), Irma Corpus, Tony (Mary) Holguin and Marcie (Diane) Holguin,

her 19 Grandchildren, 39 Great-Grandchildren, 12

Great-Great-Grandchildren, Friends and Neighbors.
