Kathryn Kuzmich Eres

April 5, 1918 - February 2, 2024

Kathryn Kuzmich Eres

At the age of 105, after a long and rewarding life, God called Kathryn Kuzmich Eres home. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 2, 2024.

Kathryn was born on April 5, 1918, in West Sacramento to parents Marin (Mike) Kuzmich and Kate Bibica Kuzmich, both immigrants from Yugoslavia. She was the youngest of three children, joining brother Michael and sister Louise. She attended grade school and high school at St. Joseph’s Academy, located at 9th and G Streets in Sacramento. Finishing her education, she graduated from Heald Business College in 1939, the same year she moved with her family “over the bridge” to Sacramento.

In 1940, she traveled to Washington, D.C. where she accepted a civil service position in the Quartermaster General’s Office. After 19 months, she transferred home and worked in a similar position at McClellan Field. After two years’ experience as a civil service worker with the War Department, Kathryn felt she could better serve her country in uniform. She was one of the Sacramento area’s first applicants to the newly formed Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC). After interviews and examinations in Salt Lake City, Utah, she was proud to be accepted.

In October 1942, she was sent to Fort Des Moines, Iowa for basic training and Officer Candidate School. Upon completion, she was commissioned as an officer. In 1944, following a desire to serve in another capacity, she enrolled in Cadet Nurse’s Training, a three-year program at Mercy Hospital, Sacramento. She graduated with an AA degree as a registered nurse (RN).

In 1952, during the Korean War, Kathryn served as an RN with the Army Nurse Corps, stationed in Japan at the Tokyo Army Hospital. She attained the rank of Captain and when her Army tour of duty ended, she returned to Sacramento. Kathryn bought a home in the Hollywood Park area of Sacramento and was a proud charter member of St. Robert Parish. She completed her nursing career working at Mercy General Hospital and then for a local doctor.

In 1964, Kathryn married John Eres and they enjoyed 38 years together until John’s passing in 2002. During retirement, they traveled twice to Yugoslavia, the birthplace of their parents, and also enjoyed trips to Greece and Italy. They were active members of the American Slavic Social Club and, after John taught Kathryn to golf, enjoyed playing the game together. Kathryn continued to play golf after John’s death, playing with friends until she reached her 93rd birthday. She was proud that her golfing history included four holes-in-one; the first in 1981 and the last in 2007, at the age of 89!

Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, her brother Michael Kuzmich (Regina), sister Louise Kuzmich Cato (Raymond), Bibica cousins, and her nephew, Paul Kuzmich, Sr.  She is survived by many nieces and nephews from both the Kuzmich and Eres families: Tom Kuzmich (Fran), Joseph Kuzmich (Joan), Paul’s wife Jeanne, Tom Eres (Jackie), Sally Pierlioni and Mike Tooley. She is also survived by a stepdaughter, Donna Landis, and step-granddaughter, Christina Bas.

The family wants to express gratitude and thanks to Mariana, owner of Walnut Home Care, and her staff for their loving, devoted care of Kathryn.

Our Aunt Kathryn was kind, thoughtful, independent and determined. She was loved by many and will never be forgotten. May she rest in peace.
