Jose Luna Cardona passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on January 31, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.  Born on March 18, 1928 in Miami, Arizona. Survived by his loving children Theresa Romeo (Alex); Anthony J. Cardona (JoAnn); Christina Sprigg (Tony); his grandchildren Alexander; Christopher; Gabriella; A.J. & Anthony Jr. His numerous loving nieces, nephews; sisters and brothers in law, and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years Sally Pedroza Cardona; his parents Roman and Fernanda Cardona and siblings Ramon, Juan, Francisco, Ignacio, Maria, Roberto, Victoria, Evangelina, Roman, and Esperanza.


Jose grew up in Durango, Mexico and returned to the United States in his late teens. He traveled across the U.S working many different jobs including as a laborer building houses specializing in woodwork and became a master craftsman. He moved to Yuba City, California where he worked in the Hops fields as a laborer and heavy equipment operator. He met his wife Sally in the late 1950’s and they married in 1963. They eventually moved to Sacramento where they raised their three children.  Jose worked for the State of California State Fair as a carpenter where he retired after many years of service.


Jose enjoyed woodworking in his garage making custom toy boxes and furniture for his children and grandchildren.  He created small scale Barbie furniture out of wood, plexi-glass and cans. He loved to work out in his yard and garden and was a certified horticulturist. In his later years he continued to stay active by walking 4-5 miles a day often walking the levee’s in the Pocket area in Sacramento.  He was an avid supporter of the California lottery buying tickets weekly in hopes of hitting the big one!


We celebrate his life on Monday, February 19th at St. Mary Cemetery and Funeral Center, 6509 Fruitridge Road, Sacramento, CA 95820 with a Viewing & Rosary starting at 1:00pm; Mass at 2:00pm and gravesite burial immediately following. The family invites everyone to a reception following the burial at: 6161 Westholme Way, Sacramento, CA 95823.


The family would like to acknowledge and thank the caregivers at Bruceville Terrace for the care they provided to our father over the past 2 years. Thank you for the kindness and support during our time of loss it has meant so much to our family.
