José Álvarez Gómez

June 23, 1941 - April 17, 2024

José Álvarez Gómez

José Álvarez Gómez peacefully passed away with family by his side at his home in Sacramento on April 17.

José was born on June 23, 1941, in Mexico City and spent his formative years in the town of Jalostotitlán, Jalisco. He immigrated to California at the age of 20 and met his beloved wife, Ana María, in Los Angeles while both were attending the same English class.

José called Sacramento home for nearly 47 years and raised five children with Ana María in the neighborhood of College Greens. José and Ana María were owners and operators of various Mexican restaurants in Sacramento, including La Palma Café and the 524 Mexican Restaurant. In retirement, he found joy in simple pleasures—taking trips to the coast, tending to his yard, watching his favorite telenovelas and staying current on world news. Yet his greatest happiness came from being surrounded by his family.

Preceding him in death were his parents José and Luisa Gómez, his brothers Refugio, Miguel, Ignacio, Guadalupe and sister Concepción Gutierrez.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Ana María, his children Ana Rosa, Estela Ceja (Anthony), Patricia Reichow (Rob), Saúl (Cecilia), José Rafael, and grandchildren Robert, Isaiah, Elizabeth, Michael, Ian, Isaac, Noah, Malena and Andrés.

His legacy is the love, joy, attention and wisdom he shared with his family and friends.
