John Henry Healey

November 2, 1949 - May 28, 2024

John Henry Healey

It is with heavy hearts that the family of John Henry Healey must share the news of his passing into the arms of God on May 28, 2024. John died peacefully surrounded by family and love beyond measure. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Philippa, and his loving wife, Margaret, whom he now joins in eternal rest.

John began life in Jackson, California on November 2, 1949 alongside his sisters, Melanie & Mary, where he fondly recalled the classic experience of small-town life in the 1950s: Baseball card in the spokes of his bicycle on Main Street delivering papers, swimming holes & fishing, and exploring the old mines of Gold Country. Later in his youth, John moved with his family to Redding, California where he spent many hours as a lifeguard and swim coach. He met his first wife, Kim, there and after college, they began their careers as teachers at St. Joseph Catholic School.

Several years later, John was offered a teaching position at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Sacramento. Soon after relocating, John & Kim’s first child, Michael was born. Shortly thereafter, John became the principal at Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Oak Park. There, he worked with Father Madigan to start what would grow from a small food closet in the basement of the church to become the Sacramento Food Bank. While transitioning from the role of school principal to nonprofit director, John & Kim welcomed their daughters Jennifer and Katherrine to their family.

In 1992, along with a dedicated team of supporters and his second wife, Margaret, John set out to found California Emergency Foodlink. His mission was simple: Provide jobs – Prevent hunger. Foodlink grew to be one of nation’s largest nonprofits providing emergency food and government commodities to food banks statewide. John and Margaret also welcomed their daughter Sarah to the family.

Following their adventures closely, in his final years, John enjoyed watching his children set forth in their own lives, and took great joy in his last great role as a grandfather.

John’s favorite quote served as the simple words that guided him: “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.” Each and every person he touched was part of his dream, and we have all been so lucky to dream with him.

John is survived by his children, Michael (Shelley Pratt) Healey, Jennifer Healey, Katherrine Healey, Sarah (Garret) Owens, his grandchildren, Lincoln and Grayson, and his sisters, Melanie Rochin (née Healey) & daughter, Mary Ann and Mary (Ted) Gallagher & son, Sean. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret, nephew, Ryan, brother-in law, Albert, and brother-in-law, Richard.
