Gladys Anne McGloughlin, April 7, 1938 Dublin, Ireland – August 8, 2024 Sacramento, California USA
Gladys, a native of Dublin Ireland, died peacefully in Sacramento on Thursday, August 8, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was 86.
She was predeceased by her siblings Richard (Anne), Tom (Agnes), Dudley (Rita) and Toni (Frank) and her youngest son Eoin.
Gladys leaves behind her beloved husband Charles of 63 years, sons Stephen (Brenda), John (Jackie) and Kevin (Pamela) and ten grandchildren, Brendan, Matthew, Abby & Emma, Anne & Brian, Ciaran, Seamus & Gaetes and Ruby and many cherished cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Gladys was a wonderful home maker and mother to her four children, as well as an accomplished portrait and landscape painter and commercial fashion artist for many of the boutique fashion shops in Dublin. She also worked with her local Parish to deliver Holy Eucharist and Meals-on-Wheels to local elderly families and started and ran two charity thrift stores for the Servite Religious Order!
When she and her family immigrated to Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1987, Gladys taught Irish dancing in the parish school and concentrated on her painting art. She even made chairperson of the Fall festival!
After three of her four boys had moved on to Sacramento, California, in 1993 Gladys & Charles decided to follow, settling first in St. Ignatius Parish, where within a year, she had a school troupe of Irish Dancers marching in the St. Patrick’s Day parade! And when they moved to South Sacramento in 1996, again, within a year she had her “St. Charles Borromeo School Irish Dancers” performing at the Parish First (and last!) International Festival!
The “Bookstore” at St Charles Borromeo Parish became her home from home! Every Saturday evening & Sunday she would be behind the counter for every Mass. Charles (who refers to himself as “Gladys’ Husband”) would bring refreshments mid morning and have lunch ready for her break between 2:30pm and 4:30pm, after which she would return to her store for her evening of fun. She loved everyone and everyone loved her!
The Legion of Mary was always a big part of Gladys’ life, having been a junior and then active member in Dublin and later, whenever she found the Legion, she was in it. She was Vice President of the Praesidium at St. Charles when Alzheimer’s stole away her memory.
She traveled widely in Europe and the US and made epic trips, visiting family in Thailand, China and New Zealand.
Sadly, this all ended in 2015 with the first signs of her Alzheimer’s Disease. She became more and more disabled and was admitted to care in 2019 and returned to her Maker three weeks ago.
May my dearly departed wife, and mother of our children, Rest in the Peace of the Lord.
