With love, pride, and deep gratitude, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, George James “Jim” Murphy, on June 2, 2025, at the remarkable age of 101.
Born on September 18, 1923, to Bertha and George Murphy in Weed, California, Jim lived through more than a century of extraordinary history, witnessing times of great challenge and remarkable change. Throughout it all, he remained a steady, humble, and resilient presence in the lives of those who knew him.
A proud member of the Greatest Generation, Jim served his country with honor during World War II, as part of the Army Air Corps, landing on Omaha Beach on June 13, 1944.
After the war, Jim went on to graduate from UC Berkeley with a degree in journalism. He began his career with the California Woolgrowers Association, later working as a field editor for the Western Livestock Journal for many years. He eventually transitioned into estate planning for ranchers and cattlemen, working with New York Life, EF Hutton, and other insurance companies.
Jim was predeceased by his wife, artist Elaine K. Murphy, and is survived by his children: Patrick Murphy, Michele Barni, Kathleen Murphy, and Maureen Murphy Joyce, along with their spouses: Dave Barni, Tony Ferrario, and John Joyce. He was a proud grandfather to Erin Barni and her spouse Tyler Kuhlman, Meghan Barni, and Sean Barni, and a delighted great-grandfather to Savannah and Wesley Kuhlman.
A private family service was held to honor Jim’s life, and he is interred at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Sacramento, California. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in his memory to Catholic Relief Services, an organization that reflects his lifelong values of compassion and service to others worldwide.
George’s long life was filled with love, humor, and resilience. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
