Galo Tony Duran

Galo Tony Duran, 70, of Sacramento, CA was called home by the Lord July 29, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on July 25, 1954, in Sacramento, CA Tony dedicated his life to service, both in the military and for the State of California.

Tony proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1974 to 1981, achieving the rank of Sergeant. His military career took him to various parts of the world, including Okinawa, the Philippines, Guam, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore. During his time overseas he was assigned to the 3 rd Reconnaissance Battalion at Camp Onna Point, Okinawa as a radioman for his team. He spent time aboard the USS New Orleans, USS Tripoli, USS Bristol County, and the USS Duluth. While stationed overseas the mission of his team was to operate and focus primarily on direct action, intelligence gathering, and maritime raid operations at sea in the board, search and seizure role. At the middle of his second enlistment, Tony switched his military occupational specialty to aircraft mechanic. After completing aircraft mechanic school at Naval Air Station, Millington, TN (graduating in the top 5% in his class), He was assigned to Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, CA. His role as an aircraft mechanic was to ensure the helicopters, tilt-rotor and fixed-wing aircraft were ready for flight at a moments notice. Tony always strived for excellence in all that he did and was soon designated as a lead over subordinate enlisted personal. His commitment and dedication to his country was unwavering.

After his discharge from the Marine Corps, Tony went on to work as a mechanic at Montgomery Wards, managing a Kragen auto parts store, and had his own janitorial service. In 2001 he started working for the state of California serving the Department of Corrections and Franchise Tax Board until his retirement in 2021. Tony was known for his dedication, “can do attitude”, honesty, proactiveness, and being team focused.

The things that Tony enjoyed most was time with family and friends, NASCAR, anything to do with classic cars and aircraft, watching westerns and the military history channel and traveling to Lake Tahoe,
the Monterey area and San Diego. Tony is survived by his beloved wife of 15 years, Lisa (Kramer) Duran; his Grandson, Quin Duran; his sister Antonia Duran-Shaw and husband Ivy Shaw; his daughter-in-law Kristina Duran and stepchildren, Sarah Suppan and Anton Mayberry. Tony is preceded in death by his two sons, Charles and Jonathan Duran; his parents Filiberto and Tomasa Duran and his sister Alicia Duran.
