Eugene Hugh Scallon (Gene)
- January 13, 1934 - September 2, 2026
Eugene Hugh Scallon (Gene) of Lincoln, California passed away peacefully on September 2, 2026 at the age of 92. He was the beloved husband of Eileen Scallon and devoted father to Anne Scallon, Mary Amesbury (son-in-law Steve), Michael Scallon (daughter-in-law Elizabeth) and preceded in death by James Scallon (daughter-in-law Karen). Gene and Eileen were married for 69 wonderful years. Family was most important to Gene and he treasured his grandchildren Alanna, Brianna, Connor, Niamh, Roisin and Ryan. He lit up whenever his grandchildren were around. It was a blessing he was able to visit with all of them during his final week, just priceless.
Gene was raised on a farm in the small town of Austinville, Iowa near Ackley with his siblings Mary, Helen, Terry, Jack, Jim and Vince. His adventurous childhood helped fuel numerous “When I was a boy” stories that his family will always cherish. Gene was a graduate of Iowa State University and became a trusted veterinarian, first practicing in West Union, Iowa for five years. He then moved his growing family out west where he led a thriving practice in Covina, California for over 30 years. Gene helped found one of the first emergency animal hospitals in the U.S.
Gene was proud of his Irish heritage and had a great Irish wit. He was of strong character, and provided a great example to his children, grandchildren and others. He was humble, kind, patient and as honest as they come. The only time he raised his voice was on the golf course after three-putting or slicing a ball out of bounds.
Over the years Gene participated in and led numerous community activities and fund-raising projects at the Lions Club and Sacred Heart Church in Covina. At St. Joseph Church in Lincoln he helped raise funds as a member of the golf tournament committee to help reduce new construction debt. He also acted as chairman of the quarterly blood drive and was a highly involved member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was an avid woodworker who was most proud of building the nearly life-size manger that is displayed in St. Joseph Church every Christmas season. Countless children and adults line up after a holiday mass to see baby Jesus housed within the structure. St. Joseph is filled with many items Gene built, as are many family members’ homes.
We will miss Gene more than words can express but will keep him in our hearts always.
A celebratory mass will be held on Thursday, September 17th, 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Church in Lincoln where he was a long-time parishioner. A reception will follow in the church Family Center. Internment at Calvary Cemetery in Citrus Heights on September 18th will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canine Companions for Independence, one of Gene’s favorite charities, at https://canine.org (select donate in memory of a loved one), or to one of your favorite causes.
