Arthur “Shu” Shumaker

Arthur was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores (Amaral) Shumaker of 56 years, his parents James and Cathryn Shumaker, and his brothers, Theodore, Richard, Wallace and George.  He is survived by his two children, Cathy (Marvin) Perrigo, and Sharon (Wendell) Anderson, three grandchildren, Charise, Leslie and Greg, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Arthur, a Bryte/West Sacramento native, was born on Dec. 20, 1930. He was an avid fisherman and loved the outdoors. He also loved baseball and played in the Sacramento Municipal Twilight League in the early 50s. He loved the game so much that he became an umpire for the West Sacramento Little League and coached Babe Ruth teams and won two championships.

Arthur graduated from Sacramento High School and attended Sacramento City College and American River College.  He began his career working for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a carman. He went on to work for Aerojet as an engineer for nine years. He left Aerojet for Pacific Bell/AT&T and retired in 1997 with 32 years as a District Manager.

Arthur was a talented craftsman who enjoyed building and fixing things. He built the family home in West Sacramento in 1956.  He also enjoyed using those talents to help with his wife’s sorority events and helping his friends and neighbors in their time of need.  He frequently was found visiting with friends at the local VFW, especially on dinner nights.

Arthur’s family was always his priority. He had a life well lived and was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend who will be deeply missed.
