Sacramento, California – Alan R. Schrader, 81, of Sacramento passed away on February 14, 2023 with his children at his bedside.
Alan, also called Dad, Grandpa, Papa and Pokey, was born in July 1941 to Raymond and Francis Schrader of West Sacramento. He graduated from Christian Brothers High School where he met his high school sweetheart, Lydia. Married in 1961, Alan and Lydia had five children, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Alan was a genuinely kind man and placed his children in the center of his life. He was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 3 in Sacramento for 15 years beginning in 1974. He took great pride preparing the scouts and his sons for many different situations and outings.
He would have the scouts in a classroom setting working on their merit badges. Then, before camping trips, he’d gather the scouts at the church and practice camping challenges they might encounter on the trip.
Alan ignited a passion for the outdoors that lives on today in his family. He would benefit in later life as his family grew into adulthood. Alan was then able to travel with them on fishing trips, crabbing adventures, duck hunting experiences and off-road racing competitions. He especially loved family gatherings in the Virginia City desert area. Alan was happiest when he and his family were all together.
Alan enjoyed cultivating vegetables in a large, elevated back yard garden. Giving away fresh vegetables and tree-ripened fruit from his trees was fun for him, but his favorite experience was the harvest at his pumpkin patch in the fall.
The entire family would gather so the grandkids could pick pumpkins, pile on rice straw bales for family photo ops and prepare to enjoy a huge family barbecue.
Alan retired from the State of California as the Supervisor of Building and Trades at the State Capitol. He previously had owned a painting business. His work ethic demonstrated to his family the value of hard work and helping others.
Alan is survived by four children: Ed (Karen), Michael (Claudia), Elaine Scordakis (George), Dan (Kate), and daughter-in-law Courtney. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Lydia, and son, Timmy. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Emily, Jennah, Ryan, Alexander, Eleece, Kendall, John, Andrew and great grandchildren Ryker and Vance.
Alan is also survived by his siblings James, Steve, William, and Janet.
